Inlay is a technique used to create contrast and drama into the design. Inlay and marquetry are very similar, but according to their definitions inlays are much simpler then marquetry. Inlays are simple geometric patterns or curves, while marquetry is a complex image.

Usually a craftsman will cut a large field of veneer and inlay a smaller piece. All pieces are then glued together and held in position until pressed onto a substrate surface.
